ClosedWhen I was expecting my first son back in 2005 my good friend and doula asked me “why aren’t you a doula?” I had a “light bulb” moment and a few months later I attended my first doula training at Douglas Collage in Vancouver BC. In Vancouver I was fortunate enough to volunteer for Doula Services Association where I supported families of all walks of life and connected with many other hard working doulas. While in Vancouver I stumbled upon a Birthing From Within Childbirth Class; the way I saw birth, and supported families was forever changed. I later attended the Level 1 Birthing From Within and Doula From Within training workshop. In 2008 my family relocated to Truro Nova Scotia, and since then we have added another amazing little boy to our clan, I have completed the three day Making a Difference with Breastfeeding training and I have trained, and am certified through CAPPA to teach private Childbirth Education, and attended a Birthing From Within Workshop on Birth as a Hero’s Journey. Birth is my passion and I find myself constantly learning new and brilliant things from the families I support and from my inspiring colleagues.
My Philosophy
- Labour is a rite of passage, a transition into parenthood.
- Parents need to prepare to go into the unknown, both in the labour process and as new parents.
- There is no right or wrong way to give birth, whatever path your birth journey takes is the one you need to go through to be that baby’s parent.
- It is imperative for mothers to trust their caregivers, to have the skills to advocate for themselves, and to know the questions to ask upon an unexpected turn of events.
- Positive support can make a huge difference in a woman’s birthing experience, as can fear, lack of privacy and doubt.
- It is not whether a woman has an intervention free birth or not that makes her feel she has had an empowering experience, but whether she feels she has had some control over the situation and whether she feels she had the resources to cope with the situation.
- Birth has an impact on women, on families, and on how we see ourselves as such.
- If mothers can understand the difference between pain vs. suffering and then can turn off the suffering during labour (and in life) they will have a much more holistic experience.
